Roadworks mean one lane eastbound on portions of FM 518

The installation of a fiber-optic communication line for the Pearland surface water treatment plant, estimated at $ 166.8 million, will reduce the eastbound segments of Broadway between Kirby Drive and FM 521 to a single route until August 30.

U-turns and left turns may be hampered during construction, and the city recommends commuters follow detour signs.

The new line is required for the function of the new water plant.

The plant will draw water from the Gulf Coast Water Authority’s US channel near FM 521 in the western part of town.

District summer camp develops reading and writing skills

An Alvin Independent School District program took inspiration from nature this summer.

The district’s Camp Read-A-lot program targeted students in grades 1 through 5 who needed extra support or who had attended classes virtually last year.

“Ultimately, we want all students to fall in love with reading and writing,” said Shandar Hobbs, district curriculum director. “What better way to do this than around a ‘campfire’ by listening, telling and writing stories? We hope Camp Read A-lot is a fun way to experience literacy, learn basic skills, and support students as they return to class full time in a few weeks.
